Our Story

FIRST Robotics Team 4256, The Cyborg Cats, was formed in 2012 by a

group of high school students who were pushing for a larger STEM presence at our high school, Westminster Academy. Some time later, our team put on our first demonstration at Promise Academy nearby, a school for kids with disabilities. This was just the first step toward our movement to get people with disabilities more involved in STEM.

Eight years later in 2020, our team began spreading our demonstrations

to other schools in our area, such as the special education class at Ladue Middle School. This was when the idea of STEM Companion began. While it was unnamed at the time, team leaders Ava Elias and Sarah Moyer began to brainstorm ideas on how to reach out more to people with disabilities in their community.

Finally, in 2022, STEM Companion was created. Since 2012, we've spread

our demonstrations from just Promise Academy to a multitude of both middle and high schools in our area. With our website launch, we began our social media tag #BeACompanion to spread the word and get other FIRST teams involved.
